Local to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, saxophonist Mac A. Magee, Jr, has more than 10 years of performance experience. Early in life, he began playing saxophone at the recommendation of his 6th grade band director, Randolph Chestang. After playing throughout high school and a college, he left music to pursue other endeavors. But, it was his mother Willie R. Magee who convinced him to pick it up again and play for his local church, Mt. Bethel Ministries in Bassfield, MS. It was during this time that playing the saxophone became serious for him. With the guidance of great local musicians such as Leon Jenkins of Bassfield and James Evans of Jackson, MS, Mac had the opportunity to see music as a career rather than just a hobby. However, It was his father Mac Arthur Magee, Sr., who financed his first professional instrument and started him on the journey he is now on.
Mac has been blessed with great opportunities
and experiences. He has been on stage with
greats such as Ben Vereen, Lesley Gore, Mosie
Burks and Lillian Lily of the Mississippi Mass
Choir, music producer/composer Benjamin F. Wright, B. B. King, and Sonny Turner of the Platters. He has toured with southern soul performer Jeff Floyd of Florida. Locally he has been part of many great local projects and bands such as 3HG, Starz, Fort Bayou Slim, D Play Entertainment, and Eugene Eash Live. Individually, he has been very successful with his own bands 11th Hour, a neo-soul/R & B band, and Dei One, a jazz/funk/R & B ensemble. In 2013, Mac released his first album, “The Gift,” amedley of Christmas classics. Recently, Mac toured the Bahamas and Caribbean region aboard Holland America Cruise Line with the BB King Allstars Band. Currently, he is still enjoying playing with the BB King Allstars in their newest location, the BB Kings Blues Club, in New Orleans, LA. Music is definitely more than just a hobby for Mac; it has become his passion. When not traveling, Mac enjoys time at home with his wife, Kelia, and three sons. On Sundays he enjoys ministering through music with his church family at Victory International Christian Center in Ocean Springs, MS under the teaching of Pastor Carlton G. McCarter.
